What Does NORSOK M-601 Require for Piping?
WHAT WE DO
NORSOK M-601 adds welding and inspection requirements for relevant piping systems designed to ASME B31.3 for hydrocarbon production, process systems and supporting utilities.
It is not a universal welding standard for every pipe fabricated in Norway. Applicability comes from the piping design basis, project specification, contract and referenced requirements.
Start with the piping specification
Before fabrication, the project needs to establish material, service, welding and inspection requirements for the actual piping scope. That determines which procedures, qualifications and inspection activities need to be in place.
Qualification is part of readiness
Welding procedures, welder or operator qualifications and inspection personnel need to match the job before production starts. A capable workshop can still lose time if the documented route does not fit the piping being fabricated.
Inspection belongs in production
Visual testing and non-destructive testing are part of the fabrication process rather than a single final event. Our guide to NORSOK M-601 NDT, weld repair and documentation looks more closely at what happens after inspection identifies an issue.
The problem is rarely whether someone can weld the pipe
On fast-track scopes, the apparent question is often workshop capacity. The more difficult question is whether the selected material, WPS, personnel qualification, inspection route and documentation all match the piping class and service before fabrication starts.
If that alignment is missing, production can move quickly in the wrong direction. The result is not only a documentation gap; completed welds may need additional assessment, inspection or corrective work before release.
Keep piping requirements separate from structural steel requirements under NORSOK M-101. A skid or equipment package may contain both, which makes early identification of interfaces particularly important.
GravityX coordinates these interfaces through compliance-driven project execution, so engineering, fabrication, inspection and documentation are planned around the actual equipment. Always verify the applicable edition and any operator or project additions before work starts.
