NORSOK M-601: NDT, Weld Repair and Documentation
WHAT WE DO
Inspection finds information. What the project does with that information determines whether piping fabrication keeps moving or turns into a release problem.
NORSOK M-601 addresses welding and inspection requirements for relevant ASME B31.3 piping systems, including inspection, qualification of personnel and controls around weld repair.
NDT belongs in the fabrication sequence
The inspection plan should follow the weld through production. Method, timing, access and reporting need to be understood before assemblies become difficult to inspect or move into later production stages.
This matters even more on fast-track work. Compressing the schedule does not remove inspection; it reduces the margin for poor coordination between welding, NDT and release.
A repair changes the fabrication history
If inspection identifies a weld that requires repair, the project needs a controlled route for the repair and subsequent verification. The documentation has to represent the actual weld history, not only the original production plan.
Records should follow the weld
Qualification records, NDT reports and repair information are easier to control when they are generated and checked as fabrication progresses. Reconstructing them at the end creates uncertainty just when the equipment is expected to ship.
The real delay starts when steel and records separate
Most teams understand that a rejected weld has to be repaired. The larger project risk is losing the connection between the physical repair, the inspection that follows it and the documentation used for final release.
A repaired spool can look finished while the quality record still reflects the original weld. An NDT report can exist without being tied clearly to the correct joint. A late review can then stop release even though the workshop considers the work complete.
The solution is not a larger dossier at the end. It is tighter control during fabrication: identify the weld, record the inspection, control the repair, repeat the required verification and close the event before the spool moves on.
A skid or offshore equipment package may combine process piping, structural steel and protective coating. That can bring M-101 structural welding controls and M-501 coating requirements into the same delivery.
GravityX uses compliance-driven project execution to coordinate those interfaces through engineering, fabrication, inspection and documentation. The applicable project specification, piping class, inspection plan and standard edition always govern the actual scope.
