Fabricating to DNV-ST-0378: Traceability Starts Before Welding

DNV-ST-0378

For a lifting appliance, fabrication quality is not something that can be reconstructed from photographs at the end of the project.

Material identity, welding, inspection and manufacturing records are created while the equipment is being built. If the required evidence is not captured then, the finished structure may be difficult to document properly later.

The workshop needs the project requirements before production

A fabricator can only plan correctly against requirements it knows. The applicable drawings, material requirements, welding basis, inspection scope, acceptance criteria and documentation expectations need to reach production in a controlled form.

This is where a DNV-ST-0378 project becomes operational rather than theoretical.

Traceability is easiest before the parts disappear into the assembly

Once plates and profiles have been cut, fitted and welded, recovering material identity becomes harder. The same principle applies to inspection: an examination that should have taken place at a particular stage cannot always be reproduced meaningfully after coating or final assembly.

The manufacturing plan should therefore reflect the agreed verification and documentation route.

Changes on the workshop floor still belong to engineering

Real fabrication creates questions. A detail may be difficult to access. A component may need adjustment. A drawing may conflict with the physical arrangement.

The dangerous response is an undocumented ‘practical fix’. The better response is a controlled technical clarification, with the resulting change reflected in the relevant drawings and records.

Documentation is a live project deliverable

Material documentation, welding records, inspection reports and as-built information should be collected as the project progresses. Waiting until the end turns document control into an investigation.

GravityX can support the interface between engineering, fabrication, inspection and project documentation so the physical equipment and the delivery package develop together.
