Six practical situations where hazardous-area requirements meet engineering, procurement and delivery.

ATEX Compliance, From Hazard to Equipment

ATEX problems rarely begin with a missing label. They begin when the hazardous-area basis is unclear, a certified component is integrated into a new machine, existing Ex equipment is modified, documentation does not match the delivered build, or imported equipment reaches Europe without a complete conformity route. This series takes those project situations one by one. The focus is practical: what needs to be established, where responsibility sits, and what should be resolved before procurement, fabrication or delivery makes the problem harder to change.

ATEX starts with the actual hazardous-area basis

ATEX decisions depend on where the equipment will operate, what explosive atmosphere may be present and how the finished assembly is used. A label or component certificate cannot replace that design basis. Before procurement or modification starts, the project needs enough information to select equipment against the real classified area.

That is why zone classification and supplier input belong at the front of the job. For equipment selection, the distinction between Zone 0, 1 and 2 requirements can change what is acceptable. If equipment is imported, the technical file, marking and conformity route also need to be checked before the delivery is treated as complete.

Changes to equipment can change the compliance basis

An existing Ex unit can be mechanically sound and still require reassessment after a modification. Replacing a motor, changing an enclosure, adding instrumentation or altering the machine around certified components can introduce new ignition risks or change the conditions the original assessment covered.

Three questions should be answered early:

  • Is the area classification and operating environment clearly defined?
  • Does the planned equipment or modification still match that basis?
  • Does the final assembly have the documentation and conformity route needed for delivery and use?

The supporting articles cover those interfaces in more detail, including modifying existing ATEX equipment, building a machine from ATEX-certified components and recovering missing ATEX documentation.

Resolve the compliance path before it becomes a workshop problem

GravityX can support the project from engineering through procurement, fabrication and compliance-driven execution. The practical goal is to make the hazardous-area requirement part of the technical scope early enough that the finished equipment, the documentation and the real installation still describe the same thing.

Choosing ATEX Equipment for Zone 0, 1 and 2

An ATEX marking is not enough. Match the equipment to the classified area, atmosphere, temperature requirements and real operating conditions before procurement.

Modifying ATEX Equipment: When Does Compliance Need to Be Reassessed?

A new motor, instrument, enclosure or mechanical change can alter the compliance basis. Review the modification before workshop work begins.

Building a Machine from ATEX-Certified Components

Certified components do not automatically make the finished machine compliant. Integration creates interfaces, ignition risks and ownership questions of its own.

Missing ATEX Documentation: What Do You Need?

When the equipment is finished but the file is not, separate missing paperwork from technical gaps that require assessment, inspection or change.

Importing ATEX Equipment into Europe

Explosion-proof equipment from outside Europe still needs the correct ATEX conformity route, documentation, marking and importer checks before delivery.

ATEX Zone Classification: What Suppliers Need from the Customer

‘ATEX compliant’ is not a design basis. Suppliers need zone, atmosphere and operating data before they can select the right equipment.
Need ATEX requirements translated into an executable equipment or modification scope? Bring the hazardous-area basis into the project before procurement or fabrication locks the solution.
