DNV-ST-0378 Testing: Do Not Let Finished Equipment Wait
DNV-ST-0378
The lifting appliance is assembled. The paint is finished. Everyone wants to ship.
That is exactly when unresolved testing, commissioning or documentation issues become most expensive.
Mechanical completion is not project completion
For a DNV-ST-0378 lifting-appliance project, the route from fabrication to operational readiness can include inspection, functional verification, testing and documentation activities defined by the applicable scope. These need to be planned before the equipment reaches the end of production.
The specific requirements depend on the appliance, certification basis and project, so the test programme should follow the agreed requirements rather than a generic workshop routine.
Plan the test while the equipment is still being engineered
A good test plan answers practical questions early. What has to be demonstrated? What test equipment and loads are required? Where can the test be carried out? Which parties need to witness it? What documentation must be available before the test starts?
If these questions are left until mechanical completion, a technically finished product can sit waiting for logistics, instrumentation, documentation or attendance.
Commissioning should verify the complete system
The final stage is where structural, mechanical, hydraulic or electrical and control interfaces meet. Functions that looked correct within individual work packages now have to work together as an appliance.
This is also why changes made during fabrication and assembly must be reflected in the final technical basis. Testing the as-built equipment against outdated information creates unnecessary uncertainty.
The delivery package matters after the test
A successful test is not the end if the required records are incomplete. The project needs a controlled set of final documentation corresponding to the equipment that was actually built, inspected and tested.
Finish the project before the transport arrives
For deadline-critical work, GravityX can coordinate the final interfaces between workshop, engineering, testing, verification and documentation. The objective is simple: avoid having completed hardware waiting for unfinished project work.
