DNV-ST-0378: Why Certification Cannot Wait Until the End

DNV-ST-0378

The crane is already modelled. Steel has been ordered. A winch has a delivery date. Then somebody asks a simple question: ‘Has DNV seen this yet?’

That can be the moment a fast lifting-equipment project stops being fast.

Certification should not be the last work package

For equipment within a DNV-ST-0378 scope, verification can influence the project long before final testing. The design basis, calculations, drawings, materials, fabrication controls, machinery and safety functions may all form part of the route to an accepted delivery, depending on the agreed scope.

If the verification strategy is unclear, the project team can make technically reasonable decisions that later require additional substantiation or change.

Three schedules are running at the same time

A lifting-appliance project normally has more than a fabrication schedule. There is also an engineering and approval sequence, and a documentation and verification sequence. Treating these as separate activities creates avoidable waiting.

For example, fabrication capacity does not help if a critical drawing is not ready for release. A completed structure does not create a completed delivery if certificates, inspection records or test documentation are missing.

Build the verification route into the project plan

Before fabrication starts, establish who is responsible for each technical deliverable and when it must be available. Identify hold points and inspections early enough to fit the production sequence. Keep changes controlled so the manufactured equipment still corresponds with the reviewed design.

This is project management as much as engineering.

Fast-track does not mean bypassing the standard

When delivery time is short, the strongest approach is usually to run activities in parallel where the interfaces are understood: engineering with procurement, documentation with fabrication planning, and verification with design development.

GravityX works with that execution problem — coordinating the technical and production interfaces so that compliance is not discovered at the end of the job.

Working against a short delivery date? Bring verification into the project plan before fabrication becomes the critical path.
