DNV-ST-0378: Winches, Brakes and Controls Are Part of the Design

DNV-ST-0378

The steel structure is often the most visible part of a lifting appliance. It is not necessarily the part that creates the most difficult project interfaces.

Winches, brakes, cylinders, wire rope, sheaves, controls, limit functions and other components have to work as one lifting system. That makes procurement a technical activity, not simply a purchasing activity.

A component data sheet is not a system design

A supplier can provide a perfectly valid component for its stated duty while the complete lifting appliance still needs engineering work around installation, loads, interfaces and control philosophy.

The question is therefore not only ‘Is this winch large enough?’ It is whether the selected machinery is suitable for the intended lifting function and compatible with the rest of the design basis.

Purchased equipment can lock the design surprisingly early

Long-lead components are often ordered before every detail is complete. That can be necessary on a fast project, but it makes technical clarification more important, not less.

Mounting geometry, drum arrangement, reeving, brake functions, hydraulic or electrical interfaces and instrumentation can all affect surrounding engineering. If these inputs change after steel design or fabrication has progressed, the consequences spread quickly.

Controls belong in the lifting philosophy

Control and safety functions should not be treated as an electrical package added after the mechanical design. The operating modes, limits, interlocks and failure responses need to match the intended use of the lifting appliance and the applicable project requirements.

Procurement needs an engineering loop

A practical DNV-ST-0378 project keeps engineering and procurement connected. Technical requisitions need enough information to buy the right equipment. Vendor documents need to return early enough to be incorporated into the design. Changes need to reach every affected discipline.

GravityX can coordinate engineering, procurement and fabrication around the same technical scope rather than leaving the customer to manage each interface separately.
