What Is DNV-ST-0378 — and When Does It Matter?

DNV-ST-0378

A lifting appliance can look straightforward on a drawing: structure, winch or cylinder, sheaves, wire and a hook. Offshore, that is rarely the whole story. The equipment has to be designed around the loads, motions, operating conditions and safety functions that actually apply.

DNV-ST-0378 starts with the lifting operation

DNV-ST-0378 is DNV’s standard for offshore and platform lifting appliances. For a project team, the important point is not simply to put ‘DNV 0378’ on the specification. The first job is to define what the appliance will do, where it will operate and which requirements apply to that particular scope.

A crane handling stores on a platform is not the same engineering problem as equipment supporting an offshore or subsea operation. Load, geometry, environment, operating mode and interfaces all affect the design basis.

The expensive question is often asked too late

Projects get into trouble when certification is treated as something to arrange after the design is largely complete. At that stage, changes to structural details, machinery, controls, documentation or test arrangements can affect work that has already been released.

A better sequence is to establish the applicable basis before the main design decisions are locked. That gives engineering, fabrication, procurement and verification a common starting point.

What should be clear before engineering accelerates?

  • What is being lifted, and under which operating conditions?
  • What are the required capacity, geometry and working envelope?
  • How is the appliance supported and integrated with the vessel or installation?
  • Which DNV requirements and project specifications are contractually applicable?
  • What verification, inspection, testing and documentation will be required?

Those questions sound basic. They are also the questions that prevent a fast project from becoming a redesign project.

DNV compliance is part of execution

For GravityX, a DNV-ST-0378 project is not just a standards exercise. The practical challenge is keeping the technical basis, engineering, fabrication, purchased equipment, inspection and documentation aligned while the project moves.

That is particularly important on deadline-critical work. Speed comes from resolving the right issues early, not from postponing them.
